Sooo...how do we get something useful out of these combat logs? To me it just seems to be so much raw data...is there a trick to getting something useful out of these? Things in specific that we should be looking for?

Basically it comes down to analyzing the raw data and comparing it to others of your spec/class, for example as an Unholy DK in that saurfang parse my #2 and 3 abilities that caused the most dmg is both portions of Scourge strike, then we look at loth and his #2/3 abilities are diseases. Now why is that? Using data from looking at armory for gear and spec this is due to him having no pieces of t10 while I have 4. Using this you can make general assumptions on how to improve your dps, in loth's case this would be to pick up some T10. This also includes using other guilds/peoples combat logs. There is more advanced ways to do it but ya.
(Also this is not to note that loth's dps is bad or should really be doing stuff that differently, just that I don't know S priests and a good example is between me and loth's dps)

At an even more basic level, look at what other people were doing of your same class, or similar classes. For DPS this can be a bit easier, but for healers it gets a bit tricker. Anyway, if at the top you change the Dashboard to "Healing Done" and look at the Marrowgar kill:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/jv699x18wf0xa5n6/sum/healingDone/?s=2050&e=2351
Below the graph I believe by default it has our priests and Ynnah turned on, as well as Total at the very bottom of the list. Turn off Ynnah and the Totals, to leave the graph at just Innarrah and Reddon. You can see that overall, I'm outperforming you on raw heals/absorbs. If it was just a spellpower issue, then I'd merely be hovering above you throughout the fight. However, there are a few times where I spike WAY up. Why is that?
~ ~ ~
Another thing to look at is our spell casts. Click the below links, and look at the Healing By Spell tab.
Innarrah:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/jv699x18wf0xa5n6/details/11/?s=2050&e=2351
Reddon:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/jv699x18wf0xa5n6/details/26/?s=2050&e=2351
If you look at the Direct Heals column (the sum of regular Hit and the Crit columns), you can see that I cast something about 25% more than you did. Though I have more crit, you have more haste and spellpower, so I don't think a difference in healing is due to our stats. This sheet makes me think it's due mainly to activity.
A closer look shows that I have a Divine Hymn cast while you don't, so that jacks my numbers up. However, I also have about 15 more shield casts than you; and as we've talked about, that's something you're working on. On the flip side, you have almost 50% more Prayer of Mending jumps than I do--proof that you know how2priest, while I get so busy shield spamming that I forget to use
our most powerful heal
...
~ ~ ~
Finally, the best thing to do would be ta match up the graphs with the actual Marrowgar fight. Remember those areas on the graph where my healing skyrockets? One of those will be my divine hymn, but what about the others? Well, if those spikes are during the normal phase of the fight, then there is not a real problem. Yes, you
could
do more healing by tossing some renews or shields on the raid... but as last night proved, tanks fall over easily unless their healers are really on the ball. Asking you to do anything OTHER than watch the tanks is dangerous. ((Make no mistake, I'd like to do Marrowgar with 4 healers eventually, and so the tank healers WILL have to help in raid too. But that's down the road))
However, if those spikes in HPS are during the Bone Storm phase... well, then we need to talk, because what those spikes show are me really pumping out the heals, and you... not. But without matching the graphs, how can we know?
If I tell you to pump more heals, but those spikes are in phase 1... then I have basically told you to let tanks die. But if I say "she's a tank healer, she's fine" but those spikes are during phase 2.... then I'm allowing you to be lazy and hurting the raid.
~ ~ ~
So. THAT is how you use the logs for analysis, at least at a very basic level. I myself am remarkably noob at using them and still learning, but these are the simple things we can begin doing.
P.S. As a side note, try comparing the fight graph, not between priests, but between tank healers. Turn Reddon off, and turn on the graph of Innarrah and Runiccharm. See how in sync the tank healers are, or think about reasons why they might be alternating effectiveness.

This was so important I will give it its own post
Graph of damage TAKEN on Marrowgar:
http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/jv699x18wf0xa5n6/sum/damageTaken/?s=2050&e=2351
Now, if you were spiked 2398402342 times, well, then you know why you're higher on this list. However, if you were not spiked a lot and you were not tanking... then why are you above 100,000 damage taken. Melee like Salmishra & Lagoon were able to take minimal damage, and so were the ranged DPS Tarand and the healer Innarrah. (Or, if Innarrah was standing in the red circle, then Reddon at 128k was not!).
If you took more than 150,000 damage and you weren't one of the victims who got spiked eighty times... then you are holding this raid back. We could use four healers instead of five, if only you would learn to move out of fire, or stand out of the bone storm melee damage.
This analysis is messy, and the best person to analyze your performance is yourself.
It's easy for me to see that Aalona ate a LOT of coldflame damage. But, she also was impaled an awful lot. Was she bad at avoiding damage, or did she merely get spiked in the middle of a flame? I can't tell from this one graph.
What I CAN do is see who constantly appears high on the Damage Taken meters, week to week

I like this discussion.
It's also good to see things like time on Target for dps, and figure out who is slacking where. More when I'm home.

Thank you, Red. That explanation is was most informative and helpful. I do mostly think that the difference between you and I, Red, is a combination of gear and roles in the fight. Also, me needs to shield more. RAWR. Holy novaing my way through heroics has made me a bad healer. -.-

How would one do this? I'm having trouble sorting through the graphs, finding the ones that are important to look at. All the ones you've linked I hadn't even seen, after half an hour or so of playing around on the site.

The tanks take damage in turns sometimes. Don't ask me why, but sometimes they'll take massive amounts of damage at the same time, and other times they'll alternate. So I'm really not surprised by the tank healer graph - it fits up with how Marrowgar would normally go, I'd say. (though, looking at the prior attempts, apparently I let Runic do all the work on our first try. Oops.)

Holy Nova: Yes. Yes, it has. You, me, and basically every geared heal priest suffers from this. Let me give you a hint, though.
For Disc priests, shields proc
Borrowed Time
Borrowed Time not only increases spell haste, but
reduces the global cooldown
Borrowed Time is
not
consumed by Shield, Renew, Holy Nova(!), Prayer of Mending, or oddly enough, Penance casts.
Conclusion: For heroics, you can get off even MORE Holy Novas, if you practice at keeping Borrowed Time up. It lasts 5 seconds, unless you consume it with a Flash Heal or Prayer of Healing cast. Practice at 'feeling' whether you have BTime up or not. Once you're aware of it, the difference in the global cooldown is highly noticeable. That's a good skill for raids, because it provides a lower bound on your shielding. If you're actively working to keep Borrowed Time up, then by default you are
going
to be shielding more actively.
This is especially true for tank healing, where you have to use Flash Heals because you can only Shield, Renew, and Penance them so much. To proc Borrowed Time again, you'll shield a random raid member.

You don't see the graphs? Let's talk on Vent after raid tonight or sometime over the weekend, huh? It's something we should figure out. But, to answer your question, "How do we match the graph with the phases of the fight?"...
You or someone else takes notes using a stopwatch during the fight. -_-;

I see them, it's just...there's so many, and I can't find the
right
ones. I was specifically looking for both of the healing graphs you linked (ones for a specific healer and one comparing all the healers together) and I didn't find them. Maybe I just didn't spend enough time looking.
